Power Supply Units Explained
Power Supply Units Explained
The power supply is the easiest component to overlook and the most dangerous one to cheap out on. A bad power supply can destroy every other component in your computer. The PSU takes the alternating current from your wall outlet and converts it into the direct current that your computer needs, at various voltages: 12 volts for the CPU and GPU, 5 volts for drives and USB, and 3.3 volts for the chipset and SSDs.
Wattage is the most obvious specification, but it is not the whole story. A 650 watt power supply can deliver 650 watts total, but what matters is how much of that is available on the 12 volt rail, which powers the most demanding components. A quality 650 watt unit can deliver almost all of its power on 12 volts, while a cheap one might split it across multiple rails and leave you short.
Efficiency is measured by the 80 Plus rating. Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Titanium indicate how much power is wasted as heat. An 80 Plus Gold PSU is at least 87 percent efficient at typical loads, meaning only 13 percent of the power is lost as heat. Higher efficiency means lower electricity bills, less heat in your case, and usually better build quality since efficient designs require better components.
Modular cabling is a convenience feature that is worth having. A fully modular PSU lets you connect only the cables you need, reducing cable clutter and improving airflow inside your case. Semi-modular units have the essential cables like the motherboard 24-pin permanently attached but let you choose the rest. Non-modular units have all cables fixed, which can make cable management difficult in smaller cases.
Safety protections are critical. Look for a PSU that includes OVP, over voltage protection; OCP, over current protection; SCP, short circuit protection; and OTP, over temperature protection. Reputable brands like Seasonic, Corsair, EVGA, and be quiet! have good track records. Never buy a no-name power supply, no matter how cheap it is. A PSU failure can take your entire system with it.
