Flashing BIOS and Profiles
Flashing BIOS and Profiles
Flashing the BIOS means updating the firmware on your motherboard. Manufacturers release BIOS updates to fix bugs, add support for new CPUs, improve memory compatibility, and patch security vulnerabilities. Keeping your BIOS up to date is important, but the process carries some risk. A failed BIOS update can brick your motherboard, making it unusable.
Modern motherboards make flashing much safer than it used to be. Most support flashing directly from a USB drive through the UEFI interface. You download the BIOS file from the manufacturer's website, put it on a FAT32 formatted USB stick, and use the built-in EZ Flash or M-Flash tool to update. The process takes a few minutes and the system will restart automatically.
Some high-end motherboards also support USB Flashback, which lets you update the BIOS even without a CPU or RAM installed. This is a lifesaver if you buy a new CPU that requires a BIOS update that your current BIOS does not support. You just put the BIOS file on a USB stick, plug it into the designated port, and press the Flashback button on the back of the motherboard.
BIOS profiles let you save your current settings and load them later. This is incredibly useful if you overclock. You can save a stable overclock as a profile, then experiment with more aggressive settings. If something goes wrong, you can load your saved profile instead of re-entering all the settings manually. Most motherboards let you save multiple profiles and even name them.
Before flashing, always read the release notes to see what the update changes. Sometimes a BIOS update can reset your settings to default, including your overclock and fan curves. Save your current profile before flashing so you can restore it afterward. Also, never turn off the power during a BIOS update. If you have a UPS, use it. A power failure during flashing is the most common cause of a bricked motherboard.
