Ethernet Cables: Cat5e to Cat8

Ethernet Cables: Cat5e to Cat8

Ethernet cables come in different categories that determine how fast and how far they can carry data. The most common are Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, Cat7, and Cat8. Each category is tested to higher standards and can support faster speeds over longer distances. The cable you need depends on your network speed and the length of the cable run.

Cat5e is the minimum standard for Gigabit Ethernet. It can handle 1 GbE at up to 100 meters. Cat5e cables are cheap and widely available, and they are perfectly fine for most home networks. If you already have Cat5e installed, there is no need to replace it unless you are upgrading to 2.5 GbE or faster.

Cat6 is an improved version of Cat5e with tighter specifications and better shielding against interference. It can handle 1 GbE at 100 meters and 10 GbE at up to 55 meters. Cat6 is a good choice for new installations because it offers headroom for future upgrades. The cost difference from Cat5e is minimal.

Cat6a is an augmented version of Cat6 that can handle 10 GbE at the full 100 meters. It has thicker insulation and better shielding, which makes it less flexible and harder to install. Cat6a is the recommended standard for 10 GbE networks. Cat7 is similar but uses a different connector, GG45 or TERA, instead of the standard RJ45, which makes it less compatible.

Cat8 is the latest standard, designed for data centers. It can handle 25 GbE or 40 GbE at up to 30 meters. Cat8 cables are heavily shielded and very thick, making them unsuitable for home use. For home networks, Cat6 or Cat6a is the best choice. For short runs, even Cat5e is fine. The most important thing is to buy from a reputable brand, cheap cables often fail certification testing.
