DisplayPort vs HDMI
DisplayPort vs HDMI
DisplayPort and HDMI are the two main standards for connecting monitors to computers. They look similar but have different capabilities and are designed for different use cases. DisplayPort is the preferred connection for computer monitors, while HDMI is the standard for TVs and home entertainment. Understanding the differences helps you choose the right cable for your setup.
DisplayPort has higher bandwidth than HDMI at the same version level. DisplayPort 1.4 supports up to 32.4 Gbps, enough for 4K at 240 Hz or 8K at 60 Hz. DisplayPort 2.0 and 2.1 support up to 80 Gbps, enough for 8K at 165 Hz or 4K at 480 Hz. DisplayPort also supports daisy-chaining, where you connect multiple monitors in series from a single port.
HDMI 2.1 is the latest consumer version, supporting up to 48 Gbps. This is enough for 4K at 144 Hz or 8K at 60 Hz. HDMI 2.1 also supports features like eARC for high-quality audio, VRR for gaming, and Quick Media Switching for smooth video playback. HDMI is more common on TVs and consumer electronics, which makes it the better choice if you connect your computer to a TV.
For high refresh rate gaming, the cable matters. HDMI 2.0 can only do 4K at 60 Hz, while DisplayPort 1.4 can do 4K at 144 Hz. If you have a 4K 144 Hz monitor, you need DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1. For 1080p 240 Hz, both work fine. For 1440p 165 Hz, DisplayPort 1.4 is the safer choice. Always check what version your monitor and GPU support.
USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode is becoming more common, especially on laptops. A single USB-C cable can carry video, data, and power at the same time. This is convenient for connecting a laptop to a monitor with a single cable. The video signal is the same as DisplayPort, so performance is identical. For desktop users, a dedicated DisplayPort cable is still the best choice.
